CALL TO WORSHIP

On mountaintops and in valleys,

the glory of God surrounds us.

In whispers and in shouts,

the glory of God speaks to us.

In nature’s variety and color,

the glory of God calls to us.

In baptism’s claim and communion’s welcome,

the glory of God comes home to us.

*HYMN “To God Be the Glory” #485

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Jesus Christ, you are dazzling in your glory, but we are no longer amazed. Forgive us when we explain away your miracles or try to contain your mystery. Open us again to your holiness, and give us a glimpse of your true glory, that in your mercy, we may shine forth in love...

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

It is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6) The good news is that we are not only enlightened by our belief in Christ, we are cleansed and we are forgiven!

Thanks be to God!

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

O Lord, your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Give us grace to receive your truth in faith and love, and strength to follow on the path you set before us; through Jesus Christ, Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON: Mark 9:2-9

2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus.9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
