A SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 30, 2020

*CALL TO WORSHIP: (Lectern Resource, August 31, 2014)

Leader: We are God’s own; God calls us each by name and beckons us toward a rich new life.

People: Calling us, ordinary people with ordinary abilities.

Leader: We are designated and destined to work with God to accomplish extraordinary things in

accord with God's purposes.

People: How shall we hear and how shall we respond?

Leader: Let us be attentive to God even now as we worship, remembering that it is God who has

first claim upon our lives.

*HYMN “All Creatures of Our God and King” #455

CALL TO CONFESSION: (Book of Common Worship, p. 52) Rom. 5:8; Heb. 4:16

The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION: (Lectern Resource, August 31, 2014)

Holy God, it surprises us that you would use unholy ones like us in your work. We know ourselves to be weak and willful, soiled and sinful. Some of us fill our ears with the noise of secular life lest we hear your call. And some of us try to hide from you by keeping our focus on familiar routines.

But you find us and call for us, when and where we least expect it. Forgive our apathy and resistance. Forgive our failure to believe and trust that you will perfectly equip those whom you call. Amen.

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCE: (Lectern Resource, August 31, 2014)

Jesus the Christ came that we might have life, and have it abundantly. Only as we receive the grace of forgiveness and answer Christ’s call to ministry with him are we truly free and fulfilled. This is God’s gift to ordinary people; God's gift to us. Thanks be to God!

*GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Lord of light who shines into our lives with your holy word. Open our minds and our hearts that your Word may speak to us and your Holy Spirit may inspire us to be your people, today and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PSALM READING: Psalm 126

*HYMN “Seek Ye First” #333

GOSPEL READING: Romans 12: 19-21

SERMON: “Overcoming Evil” Rev. David McDonald

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*”catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

*HYMN “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” #356

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Philem. 25
