CALL TO WORSHIP –Psalm 62

For God alone our souls wait in silence.

God alone is our rock and our salvation.

In God, we shall not be shaken.

In God, we find refuge and strength.

Pour out your hearts before the Lord.

We put our trust in God,

whose steadfast love endures forever.

*HYMN “God of Grace and God of Glory” #420

CALL TO CONFESSION– Hebrews 12:1

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely. Let us confess to God our sins; praying first together, then in silence.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Lord God, we have sinned against you; we have done evil in your sight. We are sorry and repent. Have mercy on us according to your love. Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin. Renew a right spirit within us and restore us to the joy of your salvation, through Jesus Christ our Lord...

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCEfrom 2 Corinthians 5:17,18

Hear the good news: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, with whom we are reconciled through Christ.

Thanks be to God!

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

God, source of all light, by your Word you give light to the soul. Pour out on us the spirit of wisdom and understanding that our hearts and minds may be opened; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON: Mark 1:14-20

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

HYMN “Jesus Call Us GTG #720

Jesus calls us: o’er the tumult of our life’s wild, restless sea;

day by day his sweet voice soundeth saying, “Christian, follow me.”

Jesus call us: by thy mercies, Savior, may we hear thy call,

give our hearts to thine obedience, serve and love thee best of all.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
