Third Sunday of Pentecost

June 21, 2020

CALL TO WORSHIP (Book of Common Worship, p.355)

Leader: O God, you have assured the human family of eternal life through Jesus Christ our

Savior. Deliver us from the death of sin and raise us to new life in him, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

*HYMN “For the Beauty of the Earth” #473

CALL TO CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p. 52) Rom. 5:8; Heb. 4:16

The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p.53)

Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings,

and our offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord,

for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you. Forgive our sins,

and help us to live in your light, and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior.

Silent Prayers of confession

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Book of Common Worship, p. 56-57) Rom. 8:34; 2 Cor. 5:17

Leader: Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for

us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in

Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are

forgiven and be at peace.

All: Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen, amen.

Lord of light who shines into our lives with your holy word. Open our minds and our hearts that your Word may speak to us and your Holy Spirit may inspire us to be your people, today and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

*HYMN “God of Grace and God of Glory” #420

SERMON TEXT: I Kings 19: 1-15

SERMON: “What Are You Doing Here?” Rev. David McDonald

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*”catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.

*HYMN “Take My Life” #391

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. “ Rom. 15:13
