PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy Spirit, Lord, Giver of Life, we remember and celebrate your power this day. But not too much, for we are afraid of your power. You blow where you choose. We cannot control you. We often act as if you do not exist, or fail to see your work among those unlike us. Spirit of God, forgive our fear. Blow through us this day! Give our young new visions and our old new dreams, enlivening your church again…

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the assurance of the apostle, that no matter what you have done you are not bound by the past: “If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17-18). And so, I declare to you Christ’s word of forgiveness: Our sins are forgiven.

Thanks be to God!

GLORIA PATRI

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

SCRIPTURE LESSON: Acts 2:1-21

SERMON: “Flaming Tongues” Rev. Barrett Ingram

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*“catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
