A SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Sixth Sunday of Easter

May 17 2020

OPENING PRAYER ( Book of Common Worship, p. 821)

For the Neighborhood

Leader: O Lord, our creator, by your holy prophet you taught your ancient people to seek the

welfare of the cities in which they lived. We commend our neighborhood to your care,

that it might be kept free from social strife and decay. Give us strength of purpose and

concern for others, that we may create here a community of justice and peace where your

will may be done; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

*HYMN “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” #263

CALL TO CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p. 52) 1 John 1:8, 9

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p.54)

Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit.

Silent Prayers of confession

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Book of Common Worship, p. 56)

Leader: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of

Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins,

strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal

life.

People: Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Lord of light who shines into our lives with your holy word. Open our minds and our hearts that your Word may speak to us and your Holy Spirit may inspire us to be your people, today and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PSALM READING: Psalm 67

*HYMN “I Love Thy Kingdom Lord” #441

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*”catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
