*HYMN “All Things Bright and Beautiful” #267

CALL TO CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p. 52) 1 John 1:8, 9

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God..

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Lectern Resource, August 17, 2014)

All-embracing God, we confess the distinctions we make that are far from your will and from the example of Christ Jesus. We so like the comfort of being with persons like ourselves! Too often the church builds walls that separate it from the wider world. We confess that too often we fail to reach out and invite as you would have us do. We are slow to welcome into our inner circles those who hesitantly come and often hurriedly leave because they experience themselves friendless.

Forgive our failure to hear your voice in the plea of the outsider. Break through the boundaries we have put around ourselves and help us to gladly seize opportunities for compassion and service. Amen.

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCE: (Lectern Resource, August 17, 2014)

Hear God’s word from Colossians: “God rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us safe into the kingdom of his dear Son, by whom we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven.” This is the word of assurance for us and all people who sorrow for their sin and desire to lead a new life of mutual love and respect as brothers and sisters in God’s family. Praise be to Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life!

*GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Lord of light who shines into our lives with your holy word. Open our minds and our hearts that your Word may speak to us and your Holy Spirit may inspire us to be your people, today and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PSALM READING: Psalm 17: 1-7, 15

*HYMN “Now Thank We All Our God” #555

SERMON TEXT: Matthew 14: 13-21

SERMON: “5,000 Too Many” Rev. David McDonald

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*”catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

*HYMN “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” #276

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Philem. 25
