Day of Pentecost

May 31 2020

CALL TO WORSHIP (Book of Common Worship, p.338) Joel 1:1a; 2:28–29

The word of the Lord to the prophet: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old shall dream dreams and your young shall see visions.

LITANY FOR PENTECOST: B (Book of Common Worship, pps.341-342)

Leader: Christ has gathered the church in unity through the Spirit. With sure hope, let us pray:

Lord, hear our prayer. Maker of all things, in the beginning, you created heaven and earth.

In the fullness of time, you restored all things in Christ. Renew our world, in this day, with

your grace and mercy.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Life of the world, you breathed life into the flesh you created. Now, by your Spirit, breathe

new life into the children of earth. Turn hatred into love, sorrow into joy, and war into

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Lover of concord, you desire the unity of all Christians. Set aflame the whole church with

the fire of your Spirit. Unite us to stand in the world as a sign of your love.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: God of compassion, through your Spirit you supply every human need. Heal the sick, and

comfort the distressed. Befriend the friendless, and help the helpless.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader: Source of peace, your Spirit restores our anxious spirits. In our labor, give us rest; in our

temptation, strength; in our sadness, consolation.

People: Lord, hear our prayer.

(A moment of silence)

Leader: God eternal, as you sent upon the disciples the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, look upon

your church and open our hearts to the power of the Holy Spirit. Kindle in us the fire of

your love, and strengthen our lives for service in your kingdom; through your Son, Jesus

Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and forever. Amen.

CALL TO CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p. 53) See Heb. 4:14–16

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace,

that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins

against God and our neighbor.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Book of Common Worship, p.343)

Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Silent Prayers of confession

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Book of Common Worship, p. 56)

Leader: Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you

with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as

ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are,

and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your holy name.

All: Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen, amen.

Lord of light who shines into our lives with your holy word. Open our minds and our hearts that your Word may speak to us and your Holy Spirit may inspire us to be your people, today and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

SERMON: “The Surprising Presence of God” Rev. David McDonald

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*”catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
