A SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Christ the King Sunday

November 22, 2020

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE “Crown Him with Many Crowns” arr. Charles Ore

CALL TO WORSHIP –Psalm 95:1-6

HYMN “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name!” #142

CALL TO CONFESSION – Hebrews 10:21–22

Since we have, in Jesus our Savior, a great high priest in the house of God, let us approach God with confidence, claiming the promise of our baptism. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we confess that we have failed to seek your will. You come to us in glory, yet we hide our faces from you. You speak to us in truth, yet we close our hearts to your word. Forgive us, God of grace. Release us from sin, restore our lives,

and rule in our hearts, this day and always; through Jesus Christ our Lord...

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCE – 1 Peter 2:24

Jesus himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that free from sins we might live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. For we were going astray like sheep, but now have been returned to the shepherd and guardian of our souls. The good news therefore is this: In Jesus Christ we are sought, we are found, we are forgiven.

Thanks be to God!

GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Everlasting Lord, mighty and lifted up! Grant to us your Holy Spirit, that in these words of Holy Scripture our hearts might be lifted up and our minds set on heavenly realities, that contemplating the reign of our ascended Lord we might long to be with him and enter into the joy of his eternal kingdom. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON: Ephesians 1:11-23

11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. 15 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love[c] toward all the saints, and for this reason 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18 so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20 God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22 And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

SERMON: “The Last Word” Rev. Barrett Ingram

HYMN “Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun” #423

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*“catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
