SERVICE FOR LENTEN CANDLES

LITANY from Psalm 107:1, 22

One: Give thanks for the goodness of God.

All: For God’s love is everlasting.

One: Let us give of ourselves to show our thanksgiving.

All: Let our joy proclaim what God has done

 through Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER

*HYMN 14            For the Beauty of the Earth

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Merciful God, to whom all worship rightfully belongs:  as his disciples have done since the beginning of Christian witness, we have acknowledged Jesus as Lord.  We confess that he is the only way to you, yet we have tried to make our own way rather than trusting his way.  Forgive our failures to follow him faithfully; incline our hearts to please him, and empower us by your Spirit to walk with him as true disciples, both in word and in deed, to your eternal glory and praise...

Silent Prayers of Confession

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Hear the good news: Jesus, having been made perfect, became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.  (Hebrews 5:9) And so I declare to you: in Jesus Christ, we are renewed, we are cleansed, we are forgiven.

Thanks be to God!

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE “What Wondrous Love” Hymn 215

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,

What wondrous love is this, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss,

to bear the heavy cross for my soul, for my soul,

to bear the heavy cross for my soul!

*HYMN 213          In the Cross of Christ I Glory

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH         The Apostles’ Creed       pg. 35

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
