A SERVICE OF WORSHIP FOR THE LORD’S DAY

Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost

October 25, 2020

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 96)

"O Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised."

*HYMN “Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!” #430

CALL TO CONFESSION

God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God in confidence. Let us confess our sins.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of compassion, have mercy upon us. How often we do not do what we intended! What we confess is not how we act. We hear your word preached and we give our assent, but faith is found wanting when it comes to obeying. We face many conflicts. Our desires are at odds with what you command, and we do not do what you want. O God have mercy upon us, and for the sake of the Christ forgive us. And give us strength and courage to do your will day by day.

Silent Prayers of confession

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Hear the good news! Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us,

Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Believe the good news of the gospel: In Jesus Christ you are forgiven.

*GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen, amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Lord of light who shines into our lives with your holy word. Open our minds and our hearts that your Word may speak to us and your Holy Spirit may inspire us to be your people, today and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Jeremiah 29:10-14

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: Matthew 22: 34-40

SERMON: “Plans and Dreams” Rev. Barrett Ingram

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his

only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the

third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right

hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the

dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic* Church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

*”catholic” (little c) is translated as “universal” and is not a reference to the Roman Catholic Church.
